Building A Strong Immune System

How can we prevent disease by increasing our body’s immune strength?

The True Meaning of Immunity

A healthy, functioning immune system is a goal we all share, and the true meaning of the word immunity. We will be providing an expanding list of articles on how to do just that. For now, here is a very brief overview and introduction:

  1. Limit sugar. Treats are a fun part of life for children and adults alike. Yet, too much sugar depresses the immune system. Try to especially limit treats during the months when illnesses are going around.

  2. Exercise. Ironically, the winter months are when we need exercise the most to keep the immune system at its peak. If you live in a cold climate, try to find indoor activities to keep your immune system in shape. Get yourself outside year-round as often as you can.

  3. Reduce stress. Stress is perhaps the single biggest factor that can depress the immune system. Find ways to reduce stress, such as yoga, meditation, prayer, reading, and anything else that you find relaxing. Laughter can also play a role in reducing stress.

  4. Breastfeed. For pregnant mothers or mothers of young infants, breastfeeding is consistently shown in studies to strengthen the immune system of your child, thus preventing them from catching illnesses, including vaccine-preventable diseases.

  5. Wash hands. During cold and flu season, wash your hands several times each day with warm water and soap. Hand sanitizer may also help.

healthy diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and berries is essential. Routine supplementation with fish oils, probiotics, and phytonutrients is also important. Yet, sometimes you need an extra boost. Here are some of the most important herbs, vitamins, and minerals that can help support the immune system:

  • Echinacea – This herb helps to improve white blood cell function. Some research has tried to discount its effectiveness by testing infant doses in adult patients. When dosed properly, we do believe it gives extra support to the immune system.

  • Elderberry – This berry is also know to help support immune function.

  • Zinc – Temporary extra doses of this mineral can help cells of the immune system function more optimally.

  • Vitamins A and D – These vitamins play a crucial role in keeping the immune system healthy. Short-term extra doses may provide extra benefit.

  • Vitamin C – This is an antioxidant, which means it helps neutralize stress on the body from germs.

We will have much more to share regarding the building of your immune system, with detailed articles and plenty of links to important studies. Check back in the weeks to come for updates!
